There really are two main reasons for purchasing a utility or cargo trailer. The rising price of fuel today has caused small business owners to really examine their daily operating costs. Nothing expands the hauling capability of a small vehicle more then a small utility or cargo trailer. The second reason is for a specific recreation or hobby use.

At one time, the business owner would buy the largest truck offered for sale possible which was capable of hauling all of his equipment to the jobsite. It really didn’t matter if you used all the equipment on every job or not. You just wanted the security of knowing you were prepared for anything. Although that was a nice convenience, today it is simply impractical and expensive.

In today’s world of high fuel costs, it makes much more sense to operate your business with as small a vehicle as practical and depend upon a good quality utility trailer for sale to pull your tools and equipment for the specific job at hand. Many owners of traditional “box-type” trucks are trading them in for standard and small size pickup trucks. At first, the owners suffer a bit of anxiety while deciding exactly what equipment is absolutely necessary to have with them every day and what equipment can be stored in their garage until they have that specific need.

The second benefit of owning a good quality utility or cargo trailer is that it allows you to store your equipment in the yard instead of taking up valuable room in your garage. One convenience to look for when buying a cargo trailer is a side door if it is over 10 feet in length. This allows much easier access then climbing over equipment to find that one tool you stored in the front of the trailer and you only use once every six months. There are some contractors who purchased large cargo trailers and actually set up a mobile shop inside the trailer. Another option to consider is a drop-down ramp door if you will be moving heavy equipment in and out of your trailer on a regular basis. This option very beneficial for handling heavy floor maintenance equipment. Of couse the same would apply for landscaping or garden equipment.

The second reason mentioned was using your utility or cargo trailer to haul your special “toys.” The special motorcycle and snowmobile trailers are set up specifically for those types of equipment. Of course open utility trailers are fine for hauling quads as well as lawn mowers. Actually today you will find a good quality utility trailer for sale to cater whatever your specific needs are.

Many of the causes of stress to the horse, and to the people involved, can be eliminated by the design of the horsetrailer and the proper choice of the hitch and tow vehicle. Many of the design features we discuss are self-evident when one accounts for the nature of the horse as discussed.

No matter the construction material, the number of horses being hauled, or the price of the horsetrailer, three major criteria for trailer selection should apply.

HORSE TRAILER SIZE

Because the horse can easily become claustrophobic, the horsetrailer should have enough room and light inside for him to feel comfortable, therefore, reducing his stress level. A dark interior may cause him to balk when loading because the horse’s eyes do not adjust quickly to light changes, and walking from daylight into dark horsetrailers can be frightening.

Windows, doors, and light-colored interior paint make horsetrailers seem open and inviting to the horse. Height, width, and length should be proportionate to the size of the horse. He should be able to use all four of his legs to keep his balance. This means he must be able to spread his legs apart when he needs to and to slide them forward and backward with freedom of choice as this little box propels him down the highway, twisting and turning. He must have enough headroom so he doesn’t feel cramped and can use his head and neck for balance. It is also very important that he be able to lower his head and cough to expel hay dust and other contaminants from his respiratory tract while in the horsetrailer.

VENTILATION

This mention of the respiratory system leads to the next important criteria- ventilation. As previously mentioned, the environment inside the horsetrailer is easily contaminated by dust and mold spores from hay and shavings and noxious gasses from urine and manure. Extreme temperatures, hot or cold, may also cause stress to the horse. The environment can be controlled by smart management techniques and properly ventilated horsetrailers. Adequate windows or slats and roof vents are necessary to provide a friendly climate for the horse.

SAFETY IN DESIGN

Horse trailers must be safe for the horse and the handler. There should be no sharp objects of edges that could cut or injure a horse. All latches, tie rings, butt bars, breast bars, and so forth, should be strong enough to withstand wear and tear from the largest, strongest horse that will be hauled in that horse- trailer. The entrance to horse trailers should be non-threatening to the horse, and the handler should be able to exit the horse trailer quickly if need be without the horse following. Dividers, posts, butt bars, and breast bars should operate freely and be easily removable in an emergency. Ramps should be solid, low, non-slip, and long enough to provide a measure of safety from a kick to the head of a person leaning down to lift the ramp.

Step-up horsetrailers should be wide enough to allow the horse to turn around to unload headfirst instead of backing out. A front unload ramp is even better. The floor and underbraces must be in perfect condition- there is no compromising on this point. All lights, brakes, and breakaway brake should be in working condition- the same for tires and suspension. The construction material of horsetrailers should be strong enough to handle the size, weight, and strength of the horse and equipment being hauled in it, and to hold up as well as possible in a traffic accident. It goes without saying that the tow vehicle and the hitch should be adequate to haul the horsetrailer and its full load.

These three criteria are the minimum to expect from a horse trailer. Additional features are available that can greatly improve the well-being of the horse and handler. One of the most important features available in the last few years is rubber torsion suspension. This type of suspension is far superior to the drop-leaf suspension and not only reduces shock and stress, but also has other safety features. Insulation, removable hay bags, mats, screens, bar guards on windows, removable or no rear center post, and water tanks are features that can affect the safety and stress reduction of the horse within the trailer and may not always be expensive. A list of more expensive features includes interior fans, air-ride suspension, closed-circuit TV cameras, and even air-conditioning. Nice, but not always affordable for the average person.

A refrigerated transportation container having associated therewith a cryogenic refrigeration unit and a recirculation refrigeration unit is provided. The cryogenic unit allows an initial rapid cooling of the container’s interior and the recirculation unit allows the efficient maintenance of the temperature of the container’s interior during transport. The container is particularly useful in a method of distributing refrigerated products to a plurality of geographically spaced distribution locations. The rapid cool down of the container’s interior allows a quick return of the interior to a predetermined transport temperature which, in turn, allows minimization of the risks of a failure to maintain the products at said predetermined transport temperature. A trailer is a vehicle pulled by some other powered vehicle. From agricultural and domestic to industrial, trailers are used today in a large range of operations. This is one of the major reasons why vehicle manufacturers today are designing trailers in a variety of structures suiting specific requirements of users.

While some trailers are structured primarily for carrying cargo, heavy goods and bulky materials, others are designed as caravans where people traveling from locality to another can reside while traveling.

Manufacturers today make trailers where the constituent equipments are assembled so as to form the five major types of semi-trailers, full trailers, simple trailers, travel trailers (A-trains, B-trains, C-trains) and bicycle trailers where the vehicles differ from each other according to their axle arrangement and combination. Semi-trailers consist of vehicles where the structure is supported at the front end by a fifth wheel placed on a truck and the back end is balanced by the trailer’s own wheels.

For transporting different volumes of things in minimum number of trips semi trailers are often specially designed as double-deck or step-frame trailers. In full trailers, supports are provided by axles located at both front and rear ends and the vehicles are pulled by means of draw bars. While simple trailers are designed so as to be pulled by single sets of axles, travel tractor trailers, most extensively used today for traveling and camping purposes, are classifiable as A-trains, B-trains or C-trains depending on their primary constituent structures and designs.

While A-trains are most commonly used in road trucks that carry bulky loads in remote areas of Australia, United States and Western Canada, B-trains and C-trains essentially consist of semi-trailers serially attached to other trailers. Although most trailer trucks are designed for transporting cargo and heavy materials from one place to another, different varieties of trailers are today specifically structured for storing materials and habitation of people traveling from one region to another.

There are three general categories for consideration with respect to “Good” trailer design:  Strength, Stability, and Versatility (or function).  This article discusses each of these on the following pages as they relate to trailers in general, and to utility trailers in specific.

Generally, a utility trailer is a simple flat bed (or flat bed with sides) that rides behind a vehicle and carries all sorts of “stuff”.  More specific versions may have options like tall sides, a tailgate or a top — adding Versatility.  However, there are a lot of basics that make the trailer pull well, and carry the required “stuff” as needed for years. It is key to note that not all items discussed will, or even can be present in every design.  Also, some of the items discussed may not be desirable in your particular application.  This article is not the end-all in trailer design.  The intention is to give a better understanding of some of the things that make a difference in the pleasure of ownership, longevity and usefulness of your trailer.

The tractor is a large vehicle often used for agriculture or construction purposes. The word tractor” comes from the Latin term “trahere” which means to pull.Tractors are very useful machines. on a farm, tractors are used for heavy work like plowing, harrowing, planting, watering and tilling. On the other hand, a tractor for construction is used to lift or load heavy objects. Tractors today are especially designed to perform better than the primitive ones. Apart from this, they tend to be more durable and more functional.Tractor is derived from the word “trahere,” which literally means pull. From this fact alone, we can infer the main purpose of this large vehicle. Tractors are used to draw or tow objects that are difficult to move. Using slow but powerful movements, tractors are often found on farms, enabling Utility trailers and other machinery to plow or harrow fields.

There are other types of tractors aside from the more standard farm tractors. For instance, backhoe tractors are used in many construction processes, like digging holes, completing demolitions, paving roads and breaking asphalt. They are also used to power other building equipment pieces and as light means of transportation. When used in conjunction with engineering tools, agriculture trailer may have other functions on construction sites. Other tractor types include road tractors, often used to transport freight, and locomotive tractors, often found with railway vehicles. Military units also use what are called artillery tractors for towing heavy weaponry pieces.Just like many other types of machinery, the first batch of tractors that came out in the 1800s and early part of 1900s were operated by steam engines. Aside from being obsolete, these models are no longer in use today because steam engines are unstable and may explode. Drivers may also get stuck in belt attachments. Instead of steam engines, internal combustion engines were used in later models.

Tractor-trailers
today are even more advanced, as technology found a way to fuse with this heavy machinery. Aside from having on-board computers, GPS or Global Positioning Systems may also be installed in farm tractors. With this welcome development, large-scale farms can employ both manually-driven tractors and unmanned units to plow through their fields and complete other processes.

In order to ensure the safety of tractor drivers, ROPS was also introduced in the 1960s and is now a standard among the many models of tractors. The rollover protection system ensures that drivers won’t be hurt when an accident happens, usually when driving on steep slopes and subsequently rolling over the driver.

For the first-time buyer the old tractors are very tempting. They cost less than the tax on a new tractor. They have the weight to do the job. They are simple and understandable. They even have a history and can be restored to become a major source of pride and enjoyment. But how do you know what to buy and how do you make the right purchase? There is a surprising number of machines available in every shape and size imaginable. Like most things in life, your needs have a lot to do with what you should look for. You know your needs but you will have to translate them into something tangible that will allow you to make a clear headed decision.

Depending on whether you need a tractor for your acreage or you are planning to begin restoring for pleasure you will decidedly select different machines. Certainly some of the most collectable tractors make poor work tractors and on the flip-side painstaking restoration of an extremely common machine may not be worth the many hours. Whichever emphasis you have should begin not by writing a check but rather with up-front research. Research books are available that contain this information providing nearly a century of specifications and pricing on tractors. While collectability, horsepower, hitch system, etc make up the evaluation criteria for determining what type, size, brand, or model of tractor you want, a more basic set of factors must be used for determining the specific tractor you will purchase. As always, restoring versus working with tractors will have a completely different checklist.

Those that need a machine for working their acreage are in a better position to get what they need quickly but it is amazing how many folks buy the wrong type of tractor and become disillusioned with old machines. The first thing to look at is not the tractor but rather the lay of your land and the implements you will need. If you have visions of cultivating corn after it is “knee high in July” but buy a Ford N-series or Case VAO, you will learn just how far corn stalks bend because these machines may be too low to the ground for your expectations. On the other hand if you have side-hills to traverse, like we do in the Northwest, you may be slightly displeased with your nifty hi-crop Farmall or AC.

On your implements, if you look at the implement first, you can calculate your horsepower requirements and make sure the tractor model you select has the weight and power to do the job. If you see the need for a 10 foot disk harrow, you will be unhappy with a Farmall Cub. Thorough research is good insurance in avoiding the wrong purchase. Once the model is selected, your preview of the available machines is almost entirely an exercise in mechanics, the cosmetics should probably be placed low on the list. Many good working tractors and trailers haven’t seen paint in years and have some of the ugliest welds in the oddest places. Your machine must be mechanically sound from the onset and have few problems in the near future.

Even if you are willing to work on it right away, you probably won’t be interested in a complete restoration for sometime and need to minimize the number of upfront jobs. It has to start easily, run well when hot, charge the electrical system, pick up implements, brake well, steer well, and get good traction. This conjures up the image of going out for a preview armed with a toolbox containing a compression tester, expensive Fluke digital multimeter, hydrometer, and other specialty tools. Unfortunately most of us don’t own them and wouldn’t even know what to do with them. We have to rely on our eyes, ears, and common sense. Anyway the tools would end up costing more than the tractor.
